Join City Club on February 20 as Dr. Timothy J Standring, Gates Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the Denver Art Museum, gives us an insider’s view of the museum's upcoming special exhibition, “Degas: A Passion for Perfection."

Open to visitors from February 11 – May 20, this exhibition will showcase 100 works of the prolific French artist Edgar Degas, from 1855 to 1906. The selection of paintings, drawings, pastels, etchings, monotypes, and sculptures in bronze focus on prominent and recurring themes throughout the artist’s 60-year career – including learning from past and contemporary artists, a lifelong fascination with the nude, a passion for horses, and a strong interest in opera and dance. The DAM is the sole American venue for the exhibition.

Dr. Timothy J. Standring is the Gates Foundation Curator of Painting & Sculpture at the Denver Art Museum.  Since he began at the museum in 1989, Dr. Standring has served the Museum in many capacities: as Deputy Director, Chief Curator, and Curator of the Berger Collection.  In addition to his upcoming Degas exhibition, he has curated more than ten other shows at the Denver Art Museum, including Inspiring Impressionism, Sargent and Italy, The Phillips Collection, and European Masterpieces. Prior to his work at the Museum, Dr. Standring spent much of his career in academia and along the way received many fellowships, including The Clark Art Institute, the Getty, and at CASVA.  He has published many articles for a wide variety of journals on topics that have covered a broad range of subjects, including the art collecting habits of 17th-century Roman patrons, monographic studies on European artists, British watercolor sketching, Impressionist portraits, and reviews of exhibitions on works by Claude, Poussin, Bernini, Boldini, Van Gogh, Salvator Rosa, Caravaggio, Andrew and Jamie Wyeth, and Castiglione. He is currently working on Rembrandt: Painter as Printmaker, which will present new scholarship on rarely seen prints, as well as drawings and paintings by the artist. Denver will be the sole venue for the show, from Sept. 16, 2018 to Jan. 6, 2019.
