Sun Valley is the state’s poorest neighborhood with a
median household income of less than $9,000 a year. It’s an island in the Denver metropolis, cut off from the rest of the city by the stadium, the South Platte River, industry and Federal Boulevard. It is like no other neighborhood in the city and is made up almost entirely of women and children living in housing projects.
Last year, Tina Griego wrote a three-part series on how Sun Valley came to be and what may become of it. The series won the prestigious Paul Tobenkin Award from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She’ll talk about her reporting challenges and revelations in Sun Valley, as well as discuss what she looks for in a column and why.
